- With Unicode 3.1.1, a new mechanism for encoding glyph
variants has been introduced
- Some `variance indicators' have
been assigned, currently only for Mongolian
- The idea behind this mechanism is as follows:
- a variance indicator is used in adjunction with a
character codepoint
- it indicates that a different glyph should/could
be used to render it
- the glyph to use is taken from tables of glyph
variants maintained by the Unicode Consortium
- The entry barriers to this mechanism are similar as
for new characters.
- The Unicode consortium does not want to see this used
for i.e. encoding of variant glyphs in manuscripts or
similar purposes
