L'un des usages de cet élément est d'encoder des caractéristiques textuelles pour lesquelles aucun balisage approprié n'est défini par ailleurs. Un autre usage consiste à fournir un identifiant pour un segment vers lequel pointe un autre élément - c'est-à-dire à fournir une cible, ou une partie de cible, pour un élément ptr ou pour un autre élément similaire.
