Although there are many editions of Shakespeare's work online in both text and image-based editions, most archives reproduce a very limited number of copies (usually only one) of each edition of the text. That is, while the SCETI archive at Penn provides images of a copy of the third quarto of Hamlet, one cannot compare their digital image to those of copies from other libraries. The Shakepeare Quartos Archive produced by the collaborative efforts of the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities (MITH), the Folger Shakespeare Library, Oxford University, the British Library, the Huntington Library, and the National Library of Scotland, will make available every extant copy of the quartos printed prior to 1641, starting with Hamlet. We will further provide transcripts, marked in TEI P5, of each of the copies and a state of the art web-based interface that will permit users to view any number of quartos at once and create their own exhibits and annotations based on items they locate in the collection. MITH's assistant director, Doug Reside, will demonstrate a developmental version of the interface and will discuss the advantages and challenges of using TEI P5 for an image-based variorum edition.
