L'élément s peut être utilisé pour marquer les phrases ou toute autre segmentation existant dans un texte, pourvu que cette segmentation soit présente du début à la fin du texte, complète et sans imbrication. Dans le cas d'une segmentation partielle ou récursive, l'élément seg doit remplacer l'élément s.

L'attribut type peut être utilisé pour indiquer le type de segmentation prévue, selon une typologie appropriée.
